Weddings

On Koufonissi, as in most small communities, a marriage was an important event for the whole island.
It began with the matchmaking, followed by the engagement and then the wedding to complete the union of the young people.
The preparation of the wedding was also an important event: the two families contributed equally to the feast meats and pastries. They went out to invite the guests to the wedding, picked up the musicians and then the witnesses.
Finally they called the bride and groom and they all entered the church together.
The feast lasted two days.
Then after eight days the feast was repeated. This custom used to be known as “antigamos”.
Subsequently this started to take place on the day following the wedding.
The musicians, family and friends go to the newlyweds’ house to wake them and bring them to the feast.
Nowadays many people who love the island choose to hold their wedding here.
How many days their wedding feast will last is up to them!
