The ‘Fisherman’s’ Festival

On an island where the main economic activity is fishing, it would be impossible not to reserve a special day in the calendar to honor the fishermen.

The Fisherman’s Festival takes place on Saturday just before Pentecost Monday. This is 7 weeks after Easter Sunday. As the Greek Orthodox Easter is not on the same date as the Catholic and Protestant Easter, you should check the dates before you arrange your holiday if you would like to attend the festivities.

The young dance the traditional dances and folk bands play the best loved island tunes on the marina.
Fresh fish and fish delicacies together with wine are offered to everyone, while the musicians take it upon themselves to rouse everyone to the dance.
A special part of the festivities is the preparation of the traditional fisherman’s “kakavia” (fish soup), which takes place on the boats themselves and is served in glasses.

The locals and the visitors become one!
