The archaeological record shows that the island has been inhabited since the early Cycladic period. It has known pagan worshipers of the gods of Olympus, as well as the early Christians, Byzantine Christians up until the present day Christians.
All these periods have left behind the temples, the oldest of which are now buried beneath the dust of time.

New churches now rise to honor the patron saints of the island.

Saint George (Agios Georgios) is regarded as the island’s patron saint.
